Breed History

The Polish breed is one of the oldest ornamental chicken types in Europe, with origins tracing back to the Netherlands and surrounding regions. White Crested Black Polish were selectively bred for their distinctive crest and color contrast, becoming especially popular among fanciers and exhibition breeders.

Over time, the breed spread throughout Europe and later to North America, where it gained recognition for its unique appearance. While never developed as a production breed, White Crested Black Polish have remained a staple in ornamental and exhibition poultry circles.

Appearance & Behavior

White Crested Black Polish are medium-sized birds with a refined, upright build and elegant carriage. Their most defining feature is the large, rounded white crest, which sits atop a solid black body with a subtle green sheen.

Temperament is generally docile, calm, and curious. Due to their crest limiting vision, they may be more easily startled and tend to do best in quieter environments. They are not aggressive and integrate well with other gentle breeds when housed in protected conditions.

Breed Standard

White Crested Black Polish are a recognized variety under poultry standards. Key characteristics include:

•Solid black plumage with a green sheen

•V-shaped comb hidden within the crest

•White ear lobes

•Clean, slate-colored legs

Hatching Eggs

We incubate at 99.5°F and 55% humidity. Polish chicks hatch small and active. Crest development becomes visible as they grow, and early feathering may vary slightly between individuals.

When hatching eggs from this breed, minor variation in chick coloring is normal. Proper incubation practices and allowing shipped eggs to rest before setting can help improve hatch outcomes.

Notes

• Crest feathers may require occasional trimming to improve vision

•Polish chickens are more sensitive to wet or muddy conditions

•Best suited for protected runs or covered areas

•Not recommended for aggressive or overcrowded flocks
