Breed History

The Polish breed is one of the oldest ornamental chicken types in Europe, with origins in the Netherlands and surrounding Central European regions. Over time, various color varieties were developed through selective breeding, each emphasizing different visual traits.

The Tolbunt Polish variety was developed and refined in Germany, where breeders worked to stabilize its distinctive mottled and spangled patterning. German breeding programs played a significant role in shaping the Tolbunt as it is known today, and the variety later spread to other parts of Europe and North America through dedicated fanciers.

Appearance & Behavior

Tolbunt Polish are medium-sized birds with a refined, upright build and elegant carriage. Their most defining features are a large, rounded crest and complex feather patterning that blends black, white, and golden tones across the body.

Temperament is generally calm, curious, and docile. Like all Polish varieties, crest feathers can limit vision, making them more easily startled in busy environments. They perform best in protected, low-stress settings and integrate well with other gentle breeds.

Breed Standard

Tolbunt Polish are not universally recognized as a standardized variety by all poultry associations. However, breeders generally select for the following characteristics:

•Mottled black, white, and golden feather patterning

•A full, rounded crest with balanced coloration

•V-shaped comb hidden within the crest

•Clean, slate-colored legs

•Upright posture with a balanced body type

Consistency in patterning, crest fullness, and overall presentation are key priorities when selecting breeding stock.

Hatching Eggs

We incubate at 99.5°F and 55% humidity. Tolbunt Polish chicks hatch small and active. Feather coloration and pattern development may vary early on, with the Tolbunt pattern becoming more defined as birds mature.

As with other ornamental breeds, minor variation in chick coloring is normal. Proper incubation practices and allowing shipped eggs to rest before setting can help improve hatch outcomes.

Notes

Tolbunt Polish are best appreciated as an ornamental and exhibition breed rather than a production bird. Due to their crest and limited vision, they benefit from protected runs, dry footing, and attentive management.

Our breeding program focuses on maintaining strong crest development, clear patterning, and overall health, drawing from established domestic bloodlines influenced by traditional German Tolbunt lines.
